CALL FOR 2026 SOLO EXHIBITION PROPOSALS

The 2026 Solo Artist Exhibition will be held March 20 - May 15, 2026. Dates subject to adjustment.

Application deadline: Friday, November 15, 2024 at 4pm HST

Hui No‘eau Visual Art Center’s Solo Artist Exhibition provides Hawai‘i artists with the unique opportunity to exhibit a complete body of work. It challenges artists to envision and produce an innovative and cohesive show to be displayed in a professional gallery setting. Up to 2 artists may be selected to present concurrent Solo Exhibits in Hui No‘eau’s two adjoining gallery spaces. This exhibition has advanced careers, spurred community dialogue, and continues to define our local visual arts movement. The Hui’s serene location, bustling open studios, dynamic staff and faculty, and its reputation as a gathering place for Maui’s leading artistic minds combine to foster creative potential and inspiration. Selected artists are invited to engage the community in walk-throughs, hands-on workshops, and talks or lectures.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must be 18 years or older and reside full-time in the state of Hawai‘i. Artwork to be featured in the exhibition must be current – created within two years of the exhibition date (March 2024-March 2026) without supervision and not previously exhibited. Proposals are open to artists working in all media and can include more than one medium.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

Artists are invited to exhibit a current body of work focusing on a specific theme or concept which should be clearly articulated in the proposal’s artist statement. The Exhibitions Committee, which is comprised of representatives from Maui’s art community, the Hui staff, and Board of Directors, will review applications and make artist selections. Proposals are evaluated based on the inventiveness and technical proficiency of the artwork, originality and clarity of proposed concept or theme, in addition to the artwork’s reflection of the artist's statement. The committee may select two artists to each exhibit individually in the Hui’s two adjoining gallery spaces or one artist to exhibit in both galleries. The assignment of gallery spaces is determined by the Exhibitions Committee at the time of selection.

Application Materials

•  10-15 digital images of artworks along with title, medium, dimensions, year and price. Please do not submit more than 15 images. Only the first 15 images submitted will be considered for review.

New media artists should submit 2-3 projects, each with a maximum of five minutes duration. Please provide a film still for each project and email project to josephine@huinoeau.com.

• Resume

• 2-3 paragraph artist statement. Artists are invited to exhibit a current body of work focusing on a specific theme or concept which should be clearly articulated in the proposal’s artist statement. The artist statement should thoroughly explain the concept proposed, in addition to the process and materials used to create their work. Installation proposals should include sketches. Cohesive collections with accompanying representative images typically result in a strong proposal. Additional application materials can be emailed to josephine@huinoeau.com

• Application fee $20 (Hui member) / $65 (non-members — includes yearly individual membership dues)

APPLICATION DEADLINE & NOTIFICATION

All proposals must be received by Friday, November 15, 2024. Artists will be notified of selections in December, 2024. No late proposals will be accepted.
