April: what a month! Hui No‘eau joyfully participated in this year’s Valley Isle Keiki Fest at Maui Community College, where our youth teaching artists worked with 400+ little ones creating plexiglass monotype creatures while celebrating the spirit of our Maui community. Hui staff and teaching artists were proud to contribute to the success of Maui’s first-ever Empty Bowl Project on April 14. Representing Maui’s premiere community-based ceramic program, we were proud to help position the arts as a part of this important community improvement initiative by financing the firing of 200+ ceramic bowls sold during the fundraiser for the Maui Food Bank. 2012 Retrospective artist Jennifer Owen offered a free walk-through of her ceramic art exhibition, sharing fascinating insights into her techniques, architectural & personal inspirations and stories from her 38-year career as a ceramic artist and teacher. (Photos available on our Facebook page). We shared our congratulations with exemplary Hui youth arts alum Talia Gangini, who successfully traveled between Maui, Lanai and Molokai via stand-up paddle board this month to raise money for our youth jewelry program in her “Craft for a Cause” – and further congrats with the students of King Kekaulike during their 7th Annual Student Arts Integrated Showcase at the Hui.

March 1st offered a dynamic artist chat with Hui visiting artist Esterita Austin, who explained the simple step-by-step techniques that add “POW” to her fiber portraits. On March 9th, we celebrated the opening of 2012 retrospective artist Jennifer Owen’s critically acclaimed exhibition (now through May 4th), featuring a survey of her ceramic work from 1973 – present. Following in the footsteps of former Hui retrospective artists Tadashi Sato (1992), Marian Freeman (1993), Toshiko Takaezu (1993), Masami Teraoka (1995), Shige Yamada (2000), Richard Nelson (2004) and, most recently, Darrell Orwig (2011), Jennifer joins an impressive roster of individuals who have made a profound influence on local art, here to share their work & ideas with the general public. Also in March, we became the proud recipients of a grant through the Laila Twigg-Smith Art Fund of the Hawai’i Community Foundation in support of the 2012 Artists in Residence program (learn more), enjoyed hosting dozens of stupendously creative keiki during spring break’s Camp Kaluanui, and participated in the 10th Annual Historic Preservation Awareness Day at the Hawai‘i State Capitol building on Oahu, presented by the State Legislature’s Heritage Caucus, Historic Hawai‘i Foundation, and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, where we mixed & mingled with some 50 fellow history and preservation advocates, as well as members of Hawai‘i’s House of Representatives.

We kicked off December with the 2nd annual First Night, the grand opening event commemorating Hui Holidays 2011. A celebrated Maui tradition, Hui Holidays is our signature holiday, boutique-style exhibition featuring a wide and whimsical range of artwork and gifts set at accessible prices. During First Night, designer/ choreographer André Morrisette unveiled his enchanting holiday window installations built with the help of numerous artist-volunteers. The week-long installation process had Maui artist and installation collaborator Nancy Skrimstad remarking, “this has been such an inspiring project for me. André and I have wanted to work together for years- and to be able to do it here with such a newly invigorated, fresh Hui has just been really gratifying as an artist. It’s so great to see the Hui push their artists to express themselves and explore creativity.” We also enjoyed sold-out attendance during our “Winter Wonderland” Camp Kaluanui program, where our keiki created jolly gingerbread houses, jingle bell jewelry, reconstructed greeting card ornaments and more. One parent remarked, “What an incredible experience Camp Kaluanui was for (my daughter). She came home exuberant every day and looked forward to the next day. It would be hard to focus on any one highlight, she enjoyed everything from clay to paint to dance and games at the end of the day. We were really impressed with the caliber and graciousness of the teachers, everyone was great to work with and made us feel confident that our daughter was going to have a fulfilling time at art camp.”

November presented the Hui’s 5th annual Wailea Food & Wine Celebration, Li`ula i Wailea – Twilight at Wailea. Held in the elegant Hotel Wailea, elegant, guests sampled exceptional wines provided by Chambers & Chambers Wine Merchants and the best in Maui cuisine from the finest local restaurants and chefs while bidding on fine art, auction items, and an elegant dinner package presented by Hali‘imaile General Store and Chambers & Chambers at the Hui’s historic Kaluanui Estate. We also celebrated our 5th annual Portfolio Day, featuring admissions representatives from 4 of the nation’s top art schools. Specifically developed for those interested in pursuing a career in the arts, this free program offers concentrated one-on-one consultations with experienced representatives from fine arts colleges. Additionally in November, staff members presented the Hui’s emergent Arts for Social Change Initiative at the EXPO for Community Change, presented by the Hawaii People’s Fund & Hawaii Community Foundation on Oahu. One of 30 groups represented in the EXPO, Hui No‘eau rubbed shoulders with fellow grantees also doing work for progressive social change in many intersecting arenas including: Advocacy for Women/Youth/LGBTIQ, Cultural Continuity & Indigenous Rights, Criminal, Economic, Environmental, Media, Racial & Social Justice, Food Sovereignty and Peace & Demilitarization. The Hui was also represented by staff at the National Conference for Community Arts Education in Boston- the preeminent gathering of community arts education leaders in the United States. The intensive 4-day workshop was attended by 700+ community arts leaders joining together to share research on best practices in the field, national fundraising and advocacy trends, and strategies on developing geographically- relevant programming and collaborations.

October 31, 2011
The next generation of Maui’s artists will get important tools to further their future careers at the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center’s Portfolio Day, slated for 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9. High school students are invited to meet with admissions representatives from top art colleges and universities to get one-on-one critiques, discuss their work and interests, and find out about potential jobs in the arts.

And it’s all for free.

The Hui’s annual event, now in its fifth year, “serves as an unbelievable opportunity for potential college students to receive thorough, one-on-one critiques of their work as well as professional guidance for a future career in the arts,” according to Kelly McHugh, the Hui’s Youth Programs & Marketing manager.

This year, college and university representatives include Cari L. McIalwain, Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle; Robynne C. Royster, California College of the Arts in San Francisco; and Holly McVeigh, Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Ore.

High school students should bring examples of their best and most recent work, including works in progress and sketchbooks. They should be prepared to hear different opinions about their pieces and be able to explain the thought process behind their ideas, vision and execution.

Last year, 45 reviews were given to students from Kamehameha, Baldwin, Seabury, Maui High and Maui Prep schools.

Portfolio Day will be held at the nonprofit arts center’s Solarium, 2841 Baldwin Ave. Click for further info.

You’re invited! Tomorrow, (Friday, September 23 at 5:00 PM), we will be celebrating the unveiling of Patrick Dougherty’s Stickwork sculpture with a blessing & FREE community event.

During Patrick Dougherty’s 3-week residency at Hui No`eau, the artist worked directly with the community to develop, plan and create a site-specific installation using saplings of invasive tree species. The final sculpture being unveiled at this event marks the launch of Ho`ololi: The Environmental Art Garden, a new public art program which aims to cultivate community and raise awareness about Hawai‘i’s endangered ecosystems by inspiring conversation, encouraging public participation, and creating fellowship between artists and environmentalists. Each year, we will be inviting a new artist to contribute a piece to this new art garden.

Please join us tomorrow- and pass it on! Event features include:

Blessing of Ho`ololi (5:00 PM)

Lei making workshop

Live music by Hawaiian slack key guitarist John “Keoni” Trino

Outrigger Pizza (for sale!)

Complimentary cocktails & light pupu

Stickwork books for sale to have signed by the artist

Visualizing Green art exhibition in the gallery

Information booths for Community Work Day, East Maui Watershed Partnership, Leeward Haleakala Watershed Restoration Partnership, Maui Invasive Species Committee and more!

The installation created by Dougherty and his team of talented volunteers will enjoy a lifespan of approximately 3 years, offering countless, future opportunities to experience and share the Stickwork sculpture. We hope that you will continually join us to share the work of art with family, friends and community.

September presented the extraordinary 2011 Artist-in-Residence program with world-renowned environmental sculptor Patrick Dougherty. During his 3-week stay, the artist worked directly with the community to develop, plan and create a site-specific installation using saplings of invasive tree species. The final sculpture entitled On the Wild Side (a piece with a projected lifespan of 3 years) marks the launch of Ho‘ololi: The Environmental Art Garden, a new public art program which aims to cultivate community and raise awareness about Hawai‘i’s endangered ecosystems by inspiring conversation, encouraging public participation, and creating fellowship between artists and environmentalists. The project represented 2 years of research and guidance under the Maui Invasive Species Committee and the Hawai‘i State Department of Land & Natural Resources and was supported by a record-breaking 107 donors, due largely in part to our first-ever Kickstarter “friendraising” campaign, and 137 volunteer crewmembers. During this time, we also hosted 150 youth from Montessori Schools in both Makawao and Kihei, Horizons Academy and the Roots School in Explore & Discover field trips; donor-subsidized arts & science programs developed in partnership with the Maui Invasive Species Committee. Additionally, the Hui launched its fall session with 43 new classes & workshops with a cumulative attendance of 487 students and studio users of all ages, welcoming 4 visiting artists to the Hui roster from California (Dalani Tanahy and Sandy Delehanty), neighbor Hawaiian islands (Stephen Freedman), and Oregon (Dory Kanter).

August initiated a new creative challenge to our Hui community, the themed exhibition “Visualizing Green” presented 33 works selected by juror Stephen Freedman, a sculptor from the Big Island and former Hui teaching artist. Whether inspired by nature, the environmental movement, the emotions this color provokes, or any other inspiration, artists were encouraged to develop and express an authentic vision of what “green” means to them. August also marked the end of a nearly sold-out Camp Kaluanui program for youth aged 5 – 12. 9 weekly sessions were provided to residents of & visitors to our Maui community, with a record-breaking 222 creative keiki participating in multi-media arts adventures throughout the Hui’s professionally-equipped artist studios (with 10% receiving financial aid) on projects themed The Time Traveler’s Palette Knife: Art History 101, The Road to Hana: Botanical Improvisation & Fantastical Fauna, Raiders of the Lost Artifact: Extraordinary Art Expeditions, and more. “The children always come home with fabulous artwork,” remarked a camp parent, “The creativity of your instructors and coordinators are to be applauded. I know that the children will be safe with your staff. Congratulations on continuing to have such a successful program!”

July welcomed yet another successful Family Day: A Community Celebration of the Arts, a free event celebrating the unveiling of the annual Youth Art Exhibition, featuring hands-on workshops, live music, food & snacks, scavenger hunt, silent auction, face painting, art sale and more. Attended by 250+ visitors and community members, guests were also delighted by the unveiling of the summer intensive teen mural created by students from Baldwin High School, King Kekaulike, Kihei Charter School, Lahainaluna and Seabury Hall. This project, led by visiting artist John “PRIME” Hina, was completed during the aerosol mural arts workshop entitled “Know Your History,” which focused on the importance of culture through visual storytelling while developing methods of self-discovery & community building. The completed mural became the 5th installment in the Hui’s developing mural arts program, which seeks to educate, empower, and inspire Maui’s next generation of leaders through arts-based collaborations with schools and community organizations while building a sense of pride and connection within and throughout distinct Maui communities.

June’s launch of the Hui’s summer session introduced 32 new classes & workshops with a cumulative attendance of 325 students and studio users of all ages, welcoming 5 visiting artists to the Hui roster from New York (Sheila Kriemelman), neighbor Hawaiian islands (Scott Groeniger, Roger Whitlock, John “PRIME” Hina and Scott Semple). We celebrated the highly anticipated 2011 Solo Artist Exhibition, featuring Honolulu-based artist Scott Groeniger’s “Welcome to the New Lifestyle,” a new collection of large-scale, site-specific archival pigment prints composed of layered photographs and digital collages examining China’s rapid industrialization and collaborating Maui artists Sidney Yee and Kevin Omuro’s “I Turned to the Turnip,” featuring Yee’s textured acrylic paintings on wood panels and Omuro’s porcelain sculptures, saggar-fired in natural earth elements—both influenced by a minimalist Asian aesthetic and the artists’ roots in Chinese culture. Generously supported by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture & the Arts, this annual exhibition provides the unique opportunity for artists to be personally involved in all facets of exhibition planning and installation of artwork. Down in the children’s studio, our summer Camp Kaluanui keiki collaborated on a 20-foot mural themed “One Flew Over the Nene Nest: Exploring Hawaiian Habitats” as part of the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife’s FOCUS project. We were one of 16 arts organizations across the state of Hawai‘i to create a mural representing our various connections to Hawai‘i’s unique natural and cultural resources, which went on to be displayed at the Hawaii Conservation Conference in August, and the Society of American Foresters Conference in November.

In May, we proudly revealed a newly redesigned website and data management system, a project 2 years in the making that was realized due largely to the support of Hawai‘i Community Foundation’s Organizational Capacity Building and PONO grant awards. The project represents a staff-wide collaboration that is expected to boost overall organization & capacity considerably. (In the first 6 months of the site launch, we recorded a 44% increase in site traffic, complemented by sharp increases in online membership renewals, class registrations and ticket sales and a 10% increase in daily visitors). The biennial Student Salon Exhibition was another terrific May highlight, featuring 70 pieces by Hui students and teaching artists. Juried by the Hui’s core faculty — teaching artists representing a wide range of artistic media — the pieces selected best represent the technical skills and overall spirit of the students’ classes and workshops over the past two years. Some of these artists have never before exhibited in a public venue, while others have shown regularly for over thirty years — a fitting demonstration of the Hui’s mission to support lifelong education in visual arts.

Hui No‘eau proudly presents the Student Salon, a biennial multi-media exhibition of student artwork alongside the work of their teachers. “Gwen Arkin’s classes have had a major impact on the direction of my artwork these days,” remarked one student with work selected for the exhibition, “What a rare and valuable opportunity to learn about and continue to practice these almost forgotten photography techniques. I am grateful to Gwen and the Hui for allowing students and artists to revisit and re-examine the darkroom.”—Arlene Taus Salomon

In April, we launched 34 new spring classes & workshops with a cumulative attendance of 356 students and studio users of all ages, welcoming 4 visiting artists to the Hui roster from California (Kathleen Alexander) and neighbor Hawaiian Islands (Erika & Robert Molyneux and Daven Hee). Kamehameha Schools’ 1st grade class enjoyed workshops customized to their curriculum that also complemented the Darrell Orwig Retrospective (Airplane Block Printing, Nature inspired Mobile Design and Orwig-Inspired Plein Air Painting), and were thrilled by the opportunity to meet and talk story with the artist himself. We also hosted the annual team-building event for Whole Foods Market as well as the 6th annual King Kekaulike High School Student Arts Integrated Showcase, attended by 200+ teens, teachers and parents. “Like the Hui, our public schools are facing very tough economic challenges right now, with the arts under serious budgetary scrutiny as Congress considers how best to develop reading, writing and arithmetic,” remarked Susan Scofield, Principal of King Kekaulike High School, “art is what makes life interesting and worthwhile- it grabs a student’s interest and engages them in a new way that other subjects may not. It is too great a sacrifice, and one we need to come together to voice our support of as a community. This event is a celebration of the spirit of King Kekaulike; it is an exhibition of the application of all of the skills they have learned and practiced; it is a way for not only parents and families, but the entire community, to behold the heart and soul of these young lives. The Hui is a perfect venue for these students, who rarely have the opportunity to showcase their work in such a beautiful, community-based venue where everyone is welcome to experience their work. Please come see for yourself! Check out the cooperative atmosphere in all its delightful forms. Support the arts both in our public schools as well as in this beautiful place.” Right on!

In March, we were honored to reunite with former Kaluanui caretaker and revered Maui artist Darrel Orwig in celebration of a retrospective of his work: Waltzing with Time and Place. Fellow artist George Allan remarked, “Darrell is full of surprises; that’s what really amazes me. (His paintings) are brilliantly composed, and he has such wonderful vision. He paints and lets you make up your own story about things. It’s always a surprise.” The retrospective offered the community an exhilarating opportunity to see the scope of his work from 1970—the present, and his unique perspective on life. Later in March, nearly 50 creative keiki participated in our spring break art camp program: Camp Kaluanui, featuring hands-on experiences in printmaking, painting & drawing, digital media, sculpture, theater arts and more based on weekly themes: Spirited Away: Magical Masks, Dragons and More!; Buggin’ Out: Creepy Crawlies Gone Wild!; Raiders of the Lost Artifact: Extraordinary Art Expeditions!

In February, we celebrated the Hui’s 20th annual Art Affair, Maui’s preeminent art auction and social event held at Hui No‘eau’s historic Kaluanui Estate. Themed this year as “The Black & White Ball,” highlights included the presentation of the Board of Directors Recognition Award to Jim & Honey Bun Haynes and Hui Angel Award to Joe & Bev Gannon. The “Raise the Paddle” live auction raised much-needed funds for Hui youth programs as well as those supporting the 2011 Artist in Residence program with world-renowned “Stickwork” sculptor Patrick Dougherty. Later that month, the Hui participated in the first ever Maui Open Studios event, engaging new audiences and leveraging our open studio program as a workshop for both emerging and established Maui artists. We also hosted Seabury Hall’s “Winterim” session, providing youth aged 12-18 with intensive arts learning experiences in jewelry, ceramics, plein air painting and silkscreen printmaking. Seabury teacher Gayle Martelles shared, “thank you for the fine support & many thanks to the 4 great teachers & to you & the Hui for all the special little extras that made our week so magical!”
