After a 25+ year teaching career in Punahou School’s art department, Hugh moved his studio and opened Big Island Glass Gallery with his wife in Honoka’a. Hugh will present his innovative techniques for regaining heat & lowering fuel consumption in processes like ceramic firings, metal & bronze castings, and hot glass. He’ll finish with a brief overview of his own work from the ’70s to today. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from a local master in glass!

High school students are invited to meet with admissions representatives from top art colleges and universities to get one-on-one critiques, discuss their work and interests, and find out about potential jobs in the arts. College and university representatives include Cari L. McIalwain, Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle; Robynne C. Royster, California College of the Arts in San Francisco; and Holly McVeigh, Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Ore. Students should bring examples of their best and most recent work, including works in progress and sketchbooks. They should be prepared to hear different opinions about their pieces and be able to explain the thought process behind their ideas, vision and execution.

King Kekaulike High School Student Arts Integrated Showcase

April 15-16, 2011
The 2011 King K Showcase features dramatic and musical performances, creative writing, and a gallery exhibit of original student-made visual art including: drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and fashion design. This collaborative effort, initiated and coordinated by King Kekaulike’s Fine Arts Department in conjunction with the Hui No‘eau takes place at the Hui’s Solarium Gallery on Friday, April 15th at 7pm. Free refreshments are provided while they last at this magical evening of fine arts appreciation under the stars. The event is open to the public and the gallery exhibit is open through Saturday April 16th in the afternoon.

Art Affair: The Black & White Ball

Portfolio Day

Specifically developed for high school students interested in pursuing a career in the arts, this free program offers one-on-one consultations with experienced representatives from fine arts colleges. Portfolio Day encourages open dialogue about student work, addresses questions about college plans and supports exchange amongst all participants, offering so much more than your average college fair. This 4th annual program featured admissions representatives from Seattle’s Cornish College of the Arts, Portland’s Pacific Northwest College of Art and San Francisco’s California College of the Arts. This is an unbelievable opportunity for potential college students to receive thorough, one-on-one critiques of their work as well as professional guidance for a future career in the arts.

The Great Makawao Paint-Out Invitational 2010

July 6, 2010
The premier Plein Air artists in the Islands competed for seven days from Crater to Coast, creating hundreds of paintings. On July 6th the artists spent their day on the grounds of Kaluanui, followed by a free lecture by Ronaldo Macedo. The Great Makawao Paint-Out is a Viewpoints Gallery-sponsored event that brings the talent and the process to the forefront, as Maui is revealed in oils and pastels, and is a must-attend for anyone interested in the creation of the finer arts.

Glass Day
