Family Day, Youth Art Exhibition & Mural Arts

July 31, 2011July welcomed yet another successful Family Day: A Community Celebration of the Arts, a free event celebrating the unveiling of the annual Youth Art Exhibition, featuring hands-on workshops, live music, food & snacks, scavenger hunt, silent auction, face painting, art sale and more. Attended by 250+ visitors and community members, guests were also delighted by the unveiling of the summer intensive teen mural created by students from Baldwin High School, King Kekaulike, Kihei Charter School, Lahainaluna and Seabury Hall. This project, led by visiting artist John “PRIME” Hina, was completed during the aerosol mural arts workshop entitled “Know Your History,” which focused on the importance of culture through visual storytelling while developing methods of self-discovery & community building. The completed mural became the 5th installment in the Hui’s developing mural arts program, which seeks to educate, empower, and inspire Maui’s next generation of leaders through arts-based collaborations with schools and community organizations while building a sense of pride and connection within and throughout distinct Maui communities.
