AUGUST 15, 2024
We held the community in our hearts as we reflected on the one-year commemoration of the Maui fires last week. We cried. We remembered.
Last August, Hui No’eau responded to the devastating wildfires the only way we know how… by giving children and families opportunities to process their grief, shock and pain through hands on creativity. Hui No‘eau’s Art with Heart: Maui Fire Relief Program launched immediately to support those in need. Art with Heart has since benefitted more than 4,500 keiki, families, educators, and artists impacted by the fires -- and programs continue to grow in reach and impact.
We thank all of you - near and far -- who supported these efforts. Many of you gave and donated without being asked. Mahalo nui loa from the bottom of our hearts. Please click here for some testimonials and photos that demonstrate the powerful impact these programs have had and continue to have in the community.
Mahalo nui loa,
Anne-Marie Forsythe, Executive Director

SEPTEMBER 27, 2023
Our hearts are broken from the August 8, 2023 wildfires that devastated areas of Kula and historic Lahaina town. Hundreds of families lost their homes, many have lost family members and friends, and an entire community is mourning.
The Hui truly believes in the immeasurable power of the arts to support mental health, healing, and overall well-being. As people work toward rebuilding their homes and their lives, art can help us feel less alone by providing an opportunity for shared experience and expression. Art teaches us to notice details, to find beauty where we may not have seen it before, and to connect with our community and ourselves.
The Hui has continued to offer our regularly scheduled classes, which we hope will provide an outlet, a positive and healthy respite, and a safe space to create, share, and uplift one another
through this crisis. Beyond our regular programming, the Hui is serving clients of Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers in weekly art lessons taught by Hui teaching artists. Hui No‘eau has also offered free Art with Heart events at the Hui for more than 600 people to create and connect.
Our ongoing Na Keiki No‘eau Program continues to serve students in five Title 1 elementary school A+ programs, where we anticipate we will reach some of the more than 500 displaced children from Lahaina who have enrolled in other Maui schools. The Hui is hosting pop-up art booths at several free community events to directly serve those who have been impacted. We are working with partners in Lahaina to provide arts programming for families living in hotels and for children attending a satellite school serving Lahaina students immediately until their schools reopen.
The Hui is committed to lifting up and supporting our entire community the best way we know how -- the arts. We stand Maui Strong for families, Maui keiki, teaching artists, exhibiting artists,
educators, artists & crafters, cultural practitioners, and small business owners through this time of healing and recovery.

Aloha Hui ‘Ohana,
I am thrilled to announce that Hui No‘eau is open again, Monday - Saturday from 9am - 4pm! We thank our Board of Directors, donors, State & County officials, students, and staff for your generosity, encouragement, and understanding during this challenging time. Our community’s support has meant everything to us and I am so happy to share this good news!
At this time, the following areas of the Hui campus are OPEN:
Kaluanui home
Gallery
Gift Shop
Grounds
We require all guests to wear masks and will be limiting entry to the house, gallery, and gift shop to four guests. The property is open for you to walk, however, we ask that guests not gather, lounge, picnic, hang out, or enter the studios. We also ask that everyone practice social distancing of at least 6 feet. The Hui will continue to follow all State, County and CDC guidelines and we have increased our cleaning and sanitization of all shared spaces.
Right now, all Hui art studios remain closed. We hope to open up some private lessons and private studio rentals by appointment in the coming days (stay tuned!). We are also preparing to gradually begin holding other classes, summer camp, and open studios. These programs will happen only if permitted and with new sanitization practices in place. Hui classes and open studios will look and operate differently than in the past. We will share more information on these changes soon. We thank you for your patience as we all learn and adjust.
During this time, the Hui has been striving to support our community in whatever ways we can. Even while we faced great challenges as an organization, the Hui has been able to:
donate gloves to Maui Face Mask Fund
share a virtual tour of Deybra Fair’s amazing retrospective exhibition online
post online resources and art lessons for families and artists
create opportunities for online gallery sales via social media
work on free art kits and lessons for kids (which we hope to distribute soon)
create Hui logo t-shirts with Hex Press Maui (for sale online soon)
join the Kama‘aina First program (details coming soon)
partner with the Hawaii Fudge Company, a local business, to generate both sales and donations
We are so thankful for our wonderful family of supporters. Mahalo for believing in the importance of arts education and standing by us through these difficult times. If you have the capacity to give, donations of any size make a BIG difference right now. Please visit huinoeau.com/donate if you are able to help!

Our Hui family is more important to us than ever before. We're still figuring things out, but we are doing what we can to support our community:

We are here for you on our social media to lift your spirits and inspire you to #stayathome and #keepmakingart. Please reach out to us and we’ll say hello!
Our next session of classes will be released soon! There are many inspiring offerings to look forward to in the coming months. We hope you’ll sign up!

MARCH 20, 2020
Aloha Hui 'Ohana,
We find ourselves in a very unprecedented time as we try to understand the reality of life with COVID-19. We have been thinking of all of you–and hoping you and your families are safe and well.
With recommendations and news changing daily, it has been difficult to make decisions on how to move forward as the Hui. For now, it has been decided that the Hui will remain closed to ALL ACTIVITIES & ACCESS until further notice. We will continue to stay tuned to the changing news and adjust our operations as necessary. We plan to reopen as soon as it is right to do so based on the guidelines of the county, state, and national government and CDC.
This decision was made in response to Public Health Emergency Rules announced Wednesday evening by Mayor Mike Victorino. This announcement affects all non-essential travel and gatherings. If you would like to read the details, you may click here: https://www.mauicounty.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=9924
If you have questions or concerns please email info@huinoeau.com and we will do our best to respond in a timely matter.
Thank you for your love and commitment to the Hui and creative arts on Maui! We hope to see you soon.
Aloha,
Anne-Marie Forsythe
Executive Director
P.S. We will be notifying the public with any further updates through our website, email and social media platforms.
