Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center accepts applications annually for artists to exhibit a complete new body of work. The Solo Artist Exhibition is one of the only exhibitions in the State of Hawai‘i that provides the unique opportunity for artists to be personally involved in all facets of exhibition planning and installation and it challenges artists to envision and produce an innovative and cohesive body of work.

The Hui’s gallery is divided to accommodate two simultaneous exhibitions, cultivating an energetic conversation between both artists and spaces. This exhibition has advanced careers, spurred community dialogue, and continues to define our local visual arts movement. This year, the Hui invites two exceptional artists to tell their stories; Melissa Chimera will present “Agents of Change”—a series of mixed media works on linen about extinction, globalization, and our role as humans in these processes. Chimera juxtaposes the catastrophic implications of the subject matter with a method firmly grounded in formal elements of painting combined with the treatment of linen as a textile. Gabrielle Anderman will present “Being Here,” which explores her relationship to the present. In particular, Anderman is interested in the ways in which her mind keeps her distracted, preventing her from experiencing the present moment.
