Retrospective: Judy Bisgard

The Retrospective Series was designed to acknowledge the contributions of individuals who have made a profound influence on local art and to share their work and ideas with the community. Celebrated Maui artist Judy Bisgard will be the featured Retrospective Artist in honor of her contributions to Maui’s visual arts community and for her commitment to Hui No’eau and its 100-year-old Kaluanui estate.

Judy Bisgard, born and raised on Maui, attended Mills College in California where she received a degree in History with a minor in Fine Arts.  She has worked in the arts for over 40 years, volunteering as a board member at museums and non-profit organizations, such as Hui Noʻeau and the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Bisgard’s inspirations are drawn from the local Maui flora, the fast changing environment, and the decline of pineapple and plantation houses, while incorporating the color and compositional techniques of the French Impressionists. This retrospective exhibition showcases Bisgard’s experiences with a wide range of media, including plein air paintings, fiber, encaustic, pastel, intaglio, and woodcut.
